A process for fractionating an esterified cellulose ether comprising groups of the formula - C(O) - R - COOH, wherein R is a divalent hydrocarbon group, comprises the steps of a) blending the esterified cellulose ether comprising groups of the formula - C(O) - R - COOH with an aqueous liquid and setting the temperature of the resulting blend to less than 10 °C to dissolve a portion of the esterified cellulose ether in the aqueous liquid, b) separating the non-dissolved portion of the esterified cellulose ether from the remainder of the blend, and c) recovering or disposing of the esterified cellulose ether that is dissolved in the aqueous liquid.Un proceso para fraccionar un éter esterificado de celulosa que comprende grupos de la fórmula -C(O)-R-COOH, en donde R es un grupo de hidrocarburo divalente, que comprende las etapas de a) mezclar el éter esterificado de celulosa que comprende grupos de la fórmula -C(O)-R-COOH con un líquido acuoso y ajustar la temperatura de la mezcla resultante a menos de 10°C para disolver una porción del éter esterificado de celulosa en el líquido acuoso, b) separar la porción no disuelta del éter esterificado de celulosa del resto de la mezcla, y c) recuperar o eliminar el éter esterificado de celulosa que se disuelve en el líquido acuoso.
