PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for hardening the surface of a steel member, having high safety without causing reduction in quality and treatment efficiency of a coating formed on the surface of the steel member, and a surface hardened steel member showing excellent surface properties.SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing a surface hardened steel member comprises: obtaining the safety of a reduction material by adding Al-Mg alloy including Mg of 1.2-93 mass% to a salt bath using borax as a principal component; recovering the chemically active force of the salt bath by reducing AlOfine particles remaining in the salt bath to Al particles having active force by a Mg component; and achieving reduction in production cost by forming a high quality iron boride coating and achieving the long life of the salt bath. The molten borax salt bath has a temperature of 700-1150°C. The surface hardened steel member is obtained by the method.SELECTED DRAWING: None
