A preferred composition comprises one or more medium-chain alcohols (dodecanol), glycerol monoesters (glycerol monocaprylate or glycerol monolaurate), and/or benzoic acid or benzoic acid analog, in a suitable pharmaceutical carrier, preferably an ointment, along with an odorant compound, preferably eucalyptus oil. The formulations and variations of the formulation may also be used on open wounds or lesions as well as intact skin.
