The present invention provides a method for administering nitric oxide to a patient comprising delivering a nitric oxide (NO) containing gas directly to arterial blood or arterialized blood. The methods of the invention may be used in the treatment or prevention of various diseases and disorders that are responsive to nitric oxide, such as those caused by ischemia or hypoxia.
