An abdominal sonar 16 includes an ultrasound transducer array 102 with a plurality of ultrasound transducers 104, and at least one additional ultrasound transducer 106. The array trasnducers 104 produce single tone pulse signals to monitor foetal heart rate (FHR), and the additional transducer 106 produces a chirp signal to monitor uterine contractions. A digital signal processor 108 is communicatively connected to the ultrasound transducer array 102 and the additional ultrasound transducer 106. The digital signal processor 108 converts received raw fetal heart and uterine activity waveforms into an audio signal. A wireless transmitter 136 broadcasts the audio signal to a patient monitor 146 where FHR and uterine activity is calculated, displayed and stored. Foetal heart movement is also determined using the transducer array.
