摘要:
The subject invention provides novel plants that are not only resistant to 2,4-D and otherphenoxy auxin herbicides, but also to aryloxyphenoxypropionate herbicides.Heretofore, therewas no expectation or suggestion that a plant with both of these advantageousproperties couldbe produced by the introduction of a single gene. The subject invention alsoincludes plants thatproduce one or more enzymes of the subject invention alone or "stacked"together with anotherherbicide resistance gene, preferably a glyphosate. resistance gene, so as toprovide broader andmore robust weed control, increased treatment flexibility, and improvedherbicide resistancemanagement options. More specifically, preferred enzymes and genes for useaccording to thesubject invention are referred to herein as AAD (aryloxyalkanoate dioxygenase)genes andproteins. No a-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenase enzyme has previously beenreported tohave the ability to degrade herbicides of different chemical classes and modesof action. Thishighly novel discovery is the basis of significant herbicide tolerant croptrait opportunities aswell as development of selectable marker technology. The subject inventionalso includesrelated methods of controlling weeds. The subject invention enables novelcombinations ofherbicides to be used in new ways. Furthermore, the subject invention providesnovel methodsof preventing the formation of, and controlling, weeds that are resistant (ornaturally moretolerant) to one or more herbicides such as glyphosate.
