A breathing assistance apparatus (100) to create back pressure on a CPAP device is disclosed. The device varies the angle of a conduit to vary the back pressure which is especially useful where the patent is a premature baby. The device comprises a pressurized gas source (110), a container (160) comprising a liquid (165) and a conduit (145) immersed in the liquid.
