A recombinant adeno-associated virus (AAV) that expresses a paraoxonase 1 (PON1) variant protein. A formulation comprising the recombinant AAV which can be administered to a subject and provide protection against a G-type nerve agent or an organophosphorus nerve agent if the subject is exposed to the nerve agent after having received the formulation.
