A patient lifting hoist includes an operating arm and a hanger bar suspended from the arm. The hanger bar incorporates an axle which passes into an aperture in the body of the hanger bar whereby it can rotate about a substantially vertical axis with respect to the arm. The hanger bar also includes a friction device between the axle and the body of the hanger bar.
