The staple cartridge (62) has a cartridge housing (64), a plurality of staples (70) disposed in staple slots (66) formed in the cartridge housing (64) and a surgical buttress (110) having first (112) and second (114) body portions. The first body portion (112) is mounted to the cartridge housing (64) and the second body portion (114) is configured and dimensioned to be removably coupled to the anvil assembly when the staple cartridge (62) is operably coupled with the second jaw (60). The second body portion (114) is configured and dimensioned to substantially overlie at least some fastener pockets (52) defined in the anvil assembly. The first body portion (112) substantially overlies at least some of the staple slots (66) of the cartridge housing (64). At least one of the first (112) and second (114) body portions define a passage that permits longitudinal passage of a knife of the surgical stapling apparatus (10) therethrough. The knife extends above a tissue contacting surface of the cartridge housing (64).
