Various examples of methods and systems for increasing the productivity of one or more photosynthetic cultures through self-powered light systems are provided. In one example, the system includes a waterproof casing and a light module enclosed within a waterproof casing. The waterproof casing is configured to neutrally float in a culture tank containing one or more photosynthetic cultures. In another example, the method includes placing the self-powered light system in a culture tank, wherein the self-powered light system is suspended neutrally within the culture tank.
