A method for generating a digital model of a dentition, at least partially performed by a computer, obtains a 3D digital mesh representing a dentition along a dental arch, including braces, teeth, and gingival tissue. The method processes the digital mesh and automatically detects one or more initial bracket positions from the acquired mesh, processes the initial bracket positions, and identifies bracket areas for braces leaning against the tooth surface. Doing so, identifying one or more brace wires extending between the brackets, removing one or more brackets and one or more wires from the dentition model, and digitally removing one or more brackets. Modifying the 3D digital mesh by forming a reconstructed tooth surface within the mesh dentition model to generate a digital mesh dentition model.
