The present invention minimizes both subject-movement-caused blur in a phase-differential image and decreases in the resolution of a moiré pattern in the direction of the periodicity thereof. X-rays from an X-ray source (11) pass through a first grating (21) to produce a G1 image. A second grating (22) is angled with respect to the first grating (21) in a direction in the plane of the gratings, partially blocking the G1 image to produce a G2 image exhibiting a moiré pattern. An X-ray-image detector (13) detects the G2 image and generates image data. A scanning mechanism (23) moves the second grating (22) to first and second scanning positions, which are offset from each other in the direction perpendicular to the lines of the second grating. A phase-differential-image generation unit (40): divides the plurality of pixels into a plurality of groups such that each group consists of two pixels adjacent to each other in the direction of the periodicity of the moiré pattern and on the basis of image data obtained at each scanning position, generates an intensity-modulated signal from the values of the pixels in each group.
