A method and apparatus for monitoring drug-therapy compliance is disclosed. The system according to the invention enables automatic monitoring of the state of the medicament contents of the blister card. Each tablet position on the blister card is operatively associated with a different sensor that detects whether the tablet position is occupied and / or whether a dispensing event has occurred at the tablet position. In some embodiments, capacitive sensing is utilized where the capacitance of each sensor is based on the physical state of the dispensing area of the cover film of the blister pack located in the monitored tablet position. Alternative sensing approaches are based on optical, acoustic, and tactile sensors that query the dispensing area or tablet itself of each tablet location to determine whether the tablet has been dispensed.
