Embodiments of the present invention provide a sensing system for detecting a substance in a dialysate, the system inclucing: a hydrophobic barrier capable of allowing the substance in the dialysate to equilibrate to a gas； a detector capable of detecting the gas； an interface disposed between the hydrophobic barrier and the detector and configured to allow fluid communication of the gas； and one or more delivery mechanisms capable of transporting the gas from the hydrophobic barrier to the detector. A method of detecting ammonium gas in a dialysate is also provided.Les modes de réalisation de la présente invention concernent un système de détection permettant de détecter une substance dans un dialysat, ledit système comprenant : une barrière hydrophobe permettant à la substance contenue dans le dialysat de s'équilibrer vis-à-vis d'un gaz ； un détecteur capable de détecter le gaz ； une interface placée entre la barrière hydrophobe et le détecteur, conçue pour permettre la communication fluidique du gaz ； et un ou plusieurs mécanismes d'administration capables de transporter le gaz depuis la barrière hydrophobe jusqu'au détecteur. Un procédé de détection de gaz ammonium dans un dialysat est également décrit.
