This invention provides compounds and their use for treating diseases characterized by pathogenic cells featuring lysosomes or other acidic vacuoles with disease-related alterations predisposing them to accumulation of compounds of the invention, which then selectively inactivate or eliminate such pathogenic cells. Amine compounds represented by Formula IA1a, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, having activity against inflammation, fungi, unicellular parasitic microorganisms, and cancer are described. The compounds contain a monocyclic, bicyclic, or tricyclic aromatic ring having one, two, or three ring nitrogen atoms.
