A liquid antitussive composition comprising: from about 0.05 g to about 0.2 g of menthol per 100 ml of liquid antitussive composition, a solvent system and a surfactant, the composition having a maximum alcohol content of approximately 0.5 g per 100 ml of liquid antitussive composition, and the composition is stable for approximately 6 months at a temperature of 40 ° C and a relative humidity of 75% .2. The composition of claim 1, wherein the solvent system includes: non-aqueous components selected from the group consisting of glycerol, sorbitol solution, polyethylene glycol, propylene glycol and mixtures thereof； co-solvent with iodine. 3. The composition of claim 2, wherein the non-aqueous components of the solvent system comprise from about 50 g to about 70 g per 100 ml of liquid antitussive composition. The composition of claim 2, wherein the co-solvent is ethanol. The composition of claim 1, wherein the surfactant is a nonionic surfactant. A composition according to claim 5, wherein the nonionic surfactant is selected from the group consisting of a polyoxyethylene-polyoxypropylene block copolymer, hydrogenated polyoxy-40 castor oil, and mixtures thereof. The composition of claim 6, wherein the nonionic surfactant is a polyoxyethylene-polyoxypropylene block copolymer of the general formula: HO (CHO) (- CHO) (CHO) H.8.
