Disclosed is the use of eicosapentaenoic acid in free acid form in the preparation of a medicament for treating hypertriglyceridemia in a subject identified as being allergic or hypersensitive to fish or seafood, wherein said medicament contains substantially no docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) or derivative thereof and less than about 1%, by weight, of proteins, if any, and wherein the medicament does not cause infection, hypertension, diarrhea, nausea, and/or dyspepsia or wherein the subject experiences a reduced incidence of infection, hypertension, diarrhea, nausea, and/or dyspepsia compared to placebo or to an equivalent milligram dose of a commercially available prescription omega-3 fatty acid composition.
