A process for producing an esterified cellulose ether comprises the step of reacting a cellulose ether with an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid anhydride and/or a dicarboxylic acid anhydride and with a depolymerizing agent, wherein the cellulose ether has an initial viscosity of at least 500 mPa.s, measured as a 2 weight-% solution in water at 20°C, and the reaction of the cellulose ether with the aliphatic monocarboxylic acid anhydride and/or the dicarboxylic acid anhydride and with the depolymerizing agent is conducted simultaneously or in sequence in one reaction device.Un procédé de production dun éther de cellulose estérifié comprend létape consistant à faire réagir un éther de cellulose avec un anhydride dacide monocarboxylique aliphatique et/ou un anhydride dacide dicarboxylique et avec un agent de dépolymérisation, léther de cellulose présentant une viscosité initiale au moins égale à 500 mPa.s, comme mesuré en solution à 2 % en poids dans de leau à 20 °C, et la réaction de léther de cellulose avec lanhydride dacide monocarboxylique aliphatique et/ou lanhydride dacide dicarboxylique et avec lagent de dépolymérisation étant conduite simultanément ou consécutivement dans un unique dispositif réactionnel.
