The present disclosure describes the identification ofa consensus formula representing .alpha.-helical antimicrobial peptides(AHAPs) from broad classes of higher eukaryotes. Further providedare microbicidal peptides, compositions, methods, and uses, andcomputer systems and methods for identifying consensus formulaeand for searching microbicidal peptides. In some embodiments, thepeptide or fusion peptide includes one or more non-natural aminoacid residues. Also provided is a composition comprising the.alpha.-helical antimicrobial peptide or the fusion peptide, and apharmaceutically acceptable carrier. Also provided is a method oftreating an infection in a patient in need thereof, comprising administeringto the patient an effective amount of a composition comprising an.alpha.-helical antimicrobial peptide.
