The present invention refers to a chemical compound known as maturin acetate, which is obtained from medicinal plant Psacalium decompositum, where said compound has a glucose-lowering activity, which reduces the levels of blood glucose in mammals. In addition, the method for obtaining said compound is described. Compared to one of the drugs of greater use (glibenclamide) in the treatment of diabetes mellitus type 2, the maturin acetate reduces, in a 72% (dose of 50 mg/kg) compared to 69% of the commercial drug (dose of 75% mg/kg), the levels of blood glucose in the experimental model. The compound is obtained by preparing a methanol extract from the dried plant, the methanol extract being then fractioned in a serial manner with solvents of different polarity finally a chromatographic fractioning is performed in the fraction previously treated with the solvents of different polarity. This compound is useful for producing novel drugs for treating diabetes, also achieving the organic sy nthesis of the compound and the chemical modification thereof by increasing its glucose-lowering effect.La presente invención consiste en un compuesto químico denominado acetato de maturina, el cual es obtenido a partir de la planta de uso medicinal Psacalium decompositum, donde dicho compuesto exhibe actividad hipoglucemiante, ya que contribuye a disminuir los niveles de glucosa en la sangre en mamíferos. Asimismo, se describe el método para obtener dicho compuesto. Comparativamente contra uno de los fármacos de mayor uso en el tratamiento de diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (glibenclamida), el acetato de maturina disminuye en un 72% (dosis de 50 mg/kg de peso) contra un 69% del fármaco comercial (dosis de 75 mg/kg de peso) los niveles de glucosa en sangre en el modelo experimental. Para obtener el compuesto, primeramente se prepara un extracto metanólico a partir de la planta seca, después se fraccionar de manera seriada el extracto metanólico con solventes de diferente polaridad y finalmente
