A method for preparing a dog food composition formulated for small dogs having certain body structure types includes categorizing which food composition the small dog is subject to. Preferably, the small dog is categorized as a tonic body structure type or a muscular body structure type. The method further includes formulating the dog food composition to have feed ingredients and their amounts based on the size of the small dog. The protein content and lipid content of the food composition can be adjusted based on tonic or musculoskeletal categories for a particular dog or dog type. The categorizing step uses an improved body mass index, ie body weight / [(body height−height from floor to sternum) × body length].
