The present invention relates to improved compositions and methods for improving the absorption of ester prodrug in a subject. The method for co-administering to the subject an adjuvant in an amount sufficient to prevent a salt or a pharmaceutically acceptable ester prodrug of an effective amount of a carboxyl esterase-mediated hydrolysis of the ester prodrug in vivo comprising the steps, triacetin, triethyl citrate, and the adjuvant is selected from the group consisting of both here.
