A removable bidirectional self-retaining suture (100) is disclosed. The suture (100) comprises a first end (104a) and second end (104b). A plurality of retainers (103) are disposed on portions (102) of the suture adjacent the ends (104). The retainers (103) permit movement of the suture through tissue in a first direction and prevent movement in a direction opposite the first direction. A grasp engagement element (106) is located between the first (104a) and second (104b) ends for grasping the suture. The grasp element (106) may be in the form of a ring (shown), a closed loop, a tab, or an elongate section bound by tissue stops. A multidirectional suture is also disclosed with a plurality of directional retainer portions extending from a central grasp element for closing complex wounds.
