A method of making an antimicrobial coating solution is described. A method comprising the steps of: (i) mixing a chelating agent with a titanium alkoxide and fluroacetic acid； And (ii) adding an aqueous solution to the mixture of step (i). The antimicrobial coating composition described is visible light activated. A coating is formed on the surface and then heat treated to form a transparent layer on the surface.
