The cups pivot on these pins between two (2) parallel chains ensuring the cups remain upright at all times. Chains are linked by sprockets and shafts to travel in tandem and in a circular motion which ensures the cups remain 90 degrees to the chains at all times Cups are made in two pivoting halves. This allows them to be closed or open as required depending on where the cup is in relation to the chains orbit. Each cup has springs attached which close the cups at the appropriate point of operation. The cups are only open when the strategically located pins (on the top outer rim of the cup) come into contact with pressure points located in the apparatus. These pins in essence act as mechanical "actuators" temporarily supressing the springs closing action which allows the cup to open. The cups effectively remain stationary whilst embedded in the ground during the transverse of the apparatus. A combination of the downward motion, the force applied and the design of the cup assist in penetrating bed/soil and to create a depression for the plant roots including those covered by standard commercial grade plastic mulch<): -~l < it /9(1! fly N.
