PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive endoscope system having excellent assembling property, detecting the three-dimensional shape of an insertion part by obtaining the information on the distortion from Fiber Bragg Grating without using an optical coupler and capable of being miniaturized and a method of detecting the shape of the insertion part of the endoscope used therein.

SOLUTION: The endoscope system 1 comprises the insertion part 5 to be inserted into the space to be examined an optical fiber 12 inserted into the insertion part 5 to constitute an FBG sensor &lambda in which a plurality of Bragg grating parts 42 are formed a light source device 23 for introducing incident light into one end of the optical fiber 12 a detection part 26 for receiving the incident light transmitted inside the optical fiber 12, transmitting the Bragg grating parts 42 and emitted from the other end of the optical fiber 12 as transmitted light and a control device 3 for computing the Bragg wavelength defect information and the quantity of deviation of the Bragg wavelength in the transmitted light and detecting the quantity of distortion of the optical fiber 12.
