The invention in general relates to a process for extracting neem cake to yield volatiles for use in preparation of insecticides, pesticides and mosquito repellants. The process comprises the steps of extracting the volatiles by steam distillation, and then cooling the volatiles to obtain an aqueous form. Then the aqueous volatile is partitioned into a mixture of organic solvents and thereafter concentrated by flash evaporation at low temperature to obtain pure volatile concentrate free from impurities. Stabilizers are added to minimize the evaporation losses of the concentrate so prepared. This volatile concentrate alongwith a substrate forms a preparation of pesticide to control pests in different crops.
