An apparatus for detecting an intravenous access device displacement, wherein an intravascular access device is inserted into the blood vessel through the skin at the access site. The device includes an electrode positioned on each side of the vascular access device, the electrode being movable with the vascular access device and attachable to the skin against the access site. The electrodes have a fine-current flow therebetween, sufficient to induce a current through the skin between the electrodes, and the current lasts as long as the electrodes are connected. When the device is moved, one or more of the electrodes are then broken, and the micro-current is cut off.
