The present invention relates to methods for the synthesis and use of styrene maleic acid-based polymers of various changes and to hydrogel tissue orthogonal bonds that can be formed from such polymers. Specifically, a method for synthesizing a styrene maleic acid-based polymer is disclosed which is soluble in DMSO and injected into the vasculature of a male subject to produce a hydrogel tissue cross link. This hydrogel tissue bridging can occlude the vas deferens, thus forming an effective male contraceptive device.
