An apparatus includes a guide wire configured to beinserted into a passage of a living body, and at leastone electrical conductor and electrical insulationcovering a surface of the conductor with a gap formed inthe electrical insulation at a predefined position on theguide wire. A processor is configured to measure anelectrical impedance of the body between the conductor atthe gap and one or more electrodes fixed to the body, andto calculate a location of the gap within the passage inthe body in response to the measured impedance.
