A body adapter 220 for a syringe 200 having a body 218 and a plunger 212. The adapter includes a body front end 232 and a needle retraction mechanism 211 which includes a needle subassembly 221 having a needle 201 and a lumen, an actuator subassembly 210, (240). The needle subassembly is moved from the injection position to a retracted position within the body front end. The actuator subassembly includes a retaining portion 224 connected to the body front end, a speckle 254 retained in the spindle disk 214, and a branch portion 242 passed into the retaining portion. The spiral is slid within the needle lumen and spaced from the needle tip at the injection position. The biasing member deflects the NOM from the retaining portion. The binding arrangement compresses the biasing member when engaged and releases the biasing member when actuated by the pushing of a plunger which moves the branch relative to the holding portion.
