Disclosed are unsaturated 2-hydroxy-pyran-6-yl alkyl amides as represented by the general formulae (I) and A, wherein: Y is selected from -CHRay-, -CHRay-CHRby-, -CRay=CRby-, -C=C-, -CHRayCHRby-CHRcy-, -CHRay-CRby=CRcy-, and -CHRay-C=C- each Ray, Rby, and Rcy is independently selected from hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl each R1, R2, R3, R4, and R5 is independently selected from hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, alkenyl, or alkynyl R6 is selected from NR8R9 and OR10 W is selected from oxygen and NR7 and wherein the remaining substituents are as defined herein. Further disclosed is a pharmaceutical composition which comprises a compound as defined above, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, tautomer or stereoisomer thereof, and a pharmaceutically acceptable diluent or carrier for the treatment of cancer.
