A removable filter cartridge caddy containing a removable or replaceable filter medium for use in an aquarium filter assembly. The unit contains a base with an outer peripheral wall extending upwardly from the base and an inner peripheral wall extending upwardly from the base, and a space between the walls forming a reservoir in the base for catching water and filtered material from a removable filter medium, the filter mediums lower edge is retained or captured by the reservoir. A support structure consisting of a plurality of vertical legs, extend from the inner wall of the reservoir for supporting the removable filter medium cartridge, the legs extend radially outwardly along their length to form generally vertical corner supports for the removable filter cartridge and a removable cover for the caddy, the removable cover friction fits with the upper portion of the support to removably retain the cover on the caddy, the removable cover including a peripheral channel to retain the upper edge of the removable filter cartridge and a lift handle such that the caddy can be removed from the aquarium assembly by lifting the lift handle on the caddy cover.
