An x-ray imaging apparatus 10 comprising a support structure 100 supporting two separate x-ray emitting apparatus. A first x-ray emitting apparatus 130 is a single source x-ray emitter arranged for producing 2D tomosynthesis images, a second x-ray emitting apparatus 140 comprises an array of distributed x-ray emitters arranged for producing 3D tomosynthesis images. The x-ray emitting apparatus are moveable relative to the support structure. In use, when one of the first and second x-ray emitting apparatus is moved into an operative position whereby x-rays are emitted therefrom towards a target 200, simultaneously the other of the first and second x-ray emitting apparatus is moved into an inoperative position whereby x-rays are not emitted therefrom. In embodiments, the first and second x-ray emitting apparatus may be disposed on opposite sides and be rotatable into and out of position.
