A modular protection system is provided for protecting human or animal joints. The modular protection system can include a modular pad for attachment to clothing suitable for surrounding joints. Modular pads include an elongated upper pad for placement above the joint, an elongated lower pad for placement below the joint, separate from the elongated upper pad, and flexible and retractable. Intermediate pads may be provided. The elongate upper pad and the elongate lower pad each have a lower surface for attachment to clothing.
