The present invention is directed to corneal surgical devices, in particular,laser-assisted epithelial removal. Known techniques to perform epithelialremoval can yieldpoor results that adversely affect the shaping process. The laser device ofthe presentinvention can separate the epithelium from the Bowman's layer of an eye usingpulsedlaser radiation having ultrashort pulses. The laser device includescontrollablecomponents that control a focus of the pulsed laser radiation. The controlcomputercontrols the controllable components to focus the pulsed laser radiation atone or moreepithelial cell layers of the epithelium to photodisrupt at least a portion ofthe epithelialcell layers.
