A biological indicator having a variable resistance can be controlled by moving a cap or a housing of the biological indicator so that the size of a vent allowing the flow of a sterilizing agent through the housing is reduced or increased. An indicator window can show a user the current resistance of the biological indicator, and can also show a readable indicator which can be captured by a scanner to allow a sterilizing cabinet to identify the current resistance. When the resistance level indicated by the readable indicator is not suitable for a sterilization cycle selected by the user, the procedure may be delayed and a notification may be provided to the user that a problem exists.
