A device 1 for receiving and analysing a sample, where the analysis involves the use of a solution, comprising: a sample receiving portion 4; a solution capsule 5 that has a sealed configuration and a release configuration in which the contents of the capsule are released via a flow path between the solution capsule and sample receiving portion 4; and a bistable release mechanism comprising an actuator where, upon application of a threshold amount of force, the actuator will cause a one-way conversion of the solution capsule from the sealed configuration to the release configuration. Preferably the bistable release mechanism comprises a piercing member, especially a pair of piercing members (91, 92), and the solution capsule comprises a pierceable surface (54). Preferably the bistable release mechanism comprises a slip-latch. Preferably device 1 is used for obtaining a skin print, such as a fingerprint, and an analyte of interest in the skin print is detected via a competitive binding assay. Also claimed is a device for receiving and analysing a sample comprising a first sample receiving portions comprising a wicking material and a second sample receiving portion comprising a non-porous substrate.
