A method of repairing a heart valve includes the steps of providing a catheter (10) having a main body distal portion (14) and an extendable engagement tip (16) configured to extend from the distal portion (14) via an actuation member (24) positioned at a first side of the distal portion (14) to form a recess between the main catheter body and the extendable tip, which extends across most of the distal portion advancing the distal portion into the heart and positioning it adjacent a portion of a heart valve leaflet (72) extending the extendable engagement tip (16) away from the main catheter body distal portion to form the recess positioning the leaflet portion (72) within the recess, retracting the extendable tip (16) toward the main body to thereby grasp the leaflet portion (72) between the extendable tip and the main catheter body distal portion deploying a tissue fastener (62) into the leaflet portion (72) and re-extending the extendable engagement tip (16) away from the distal portion (14) to release the leaflet portion (72) after deployment of the tissue fastener (62) into the leaflet portion (72).
