The present invention relates to a cultivation system for crops such as lettuce in floating carriers on water. The cultivation system (1) comprises a basin (2) comprising at least one elongate production pond (3) with an infeed end (4) on a short side and an opposite outfeed end (5) and with water therein, a number of elongate floating carriers (6), the length of which corresponds to the width of the elongate production pond and which move in an orientation transversely of a longitudinal direction of the elongate production pond (3) through the production pond from the infeed end (4) to the outfeed end (5) at a rate corresponding to bringing the crops to full growth, which floating carriers (6) each comprise a number of growth locations (7) for the crops where holders (13) for the crops or roots of the crops extend into the water, and a transport system comprising a lifting mechanism (16), conveyors (8, 10, 11) and at least one pivot mechanism (12) between said conveyors. The present invention also relates to a floating carrier for a cultivation system.
