Porous calcium phosphate implant compositions that approximate the chemical compositionof natural bone mineral are provided. In addition to calcium phosphate, the compositionsinclude an effervescent agent to promote the formation of interconnected poresand a cohesiveness agent to maintain the shape and hardness of the hardened composition.When introduced at an implant site, the calcium phosphate compositions are remodeledinto bone. Methods for using the calcium phosphate compositions, e.g., to repairor replace bone, are also provided.
