The implant is provided for use in an ankle joint between the regenerative end surfaces defined on the distal ends of the upper tibia and the contralateral lower talus. The implant includes a substantially porous rigid component adapted to be locked against the upper tibial regeneration end surface and the lower talus regeneration end surface. The component defines an opening therethrough. The intramedullary nail is configured to pass through the component opening as it is pushed through the talus and into the tibia.
