A pressure monitoring method and system(10) for warning a patient or caregiver that soft tissuepres-sure has exceeded some predetermined level that over timewould necessitate moving the patient to minimize orpre-vent soft tissue damage. The method and system (10) entailthe use of a pressure-sensitive pad assembly (14) adaptedto be applied to a surface of the patients body and generateelectrical outputs corresponding to soft tissue pressuresensed at the surface. The system (10) monitors theelectri-cal outputs over a preselected time period and generates acumulative output signal (50,52) based on the electricaloutputs and corresponding to whether or not the soft tissuepressure has exceeded a predetermined pressure leveldur-ing the preselected time period. The system (10) generatesaudible and visual warnings if the cumulative output signal(50,52) exceeds a predetermined cumulative thresholdun-til the soft tissue pressure drops below the predeterminedpressure level.
