PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a composition for protecting a subject from acute kidney injury by treating the subject with a compound that regulates a cell cycle. Modulating the cell cycle can include inducing G0 / G1 cell cycle arrest and / or inducing cell cycle progression. As demonstrated below, it was found that even a single dose of a compound that induces G0 / G1 cell cycle arrest can protect a subject from AKI and is toxic to the kidney. It can be used prophylactically, or as a subsequent treatment to various treatments or conditions that are followed, optionally with the termination released. Once AKI is established, it can induce cell cycle progression and increase replacement of lost and damaged cells.
