A method of facilitating measurement and recording of food temperature data is disclosed. The method comprises: making available for download to a handheld computing device (110) a software application comprising executable program code. The program code can be executed by at least one processor (112) of the handheld computing device (110) causes the handheld computing device (110) to: record in a memory (114) of the handheld computing device (110) food temperature data. The food temperature data is based on a temperature sensed by a directional temperature sensor associated with the handheld computing device (110). The food temperature data indicates a temperature of a perishable food article. The handheld computing device (110) further determines whether the recorded food temperature data is outside of a stored temperature limit for the perishable food article, and if the recorded food temperature data is determined to be outside of the stored temperature limit. A notification to take corrective action in relation to the perishable food item, and a time limit by which time the corrective action should be taken is generated and displayed on a display (132) of the handheld computing device (110). A system of facilitating measurement and recording of food temperature data with above method is also disclosed.
