A liquid-filled ablation catheter with an overjacket is provided. A laser ablation catheter for ablating obstructions in a body lumen using high energy and high power ultraviolet (UV) laser pulses includes a catheter tube having an inner layer with a first refractive index. And a liquid-filled waveguide that is disposed within the inner lumen of the catheter tube and that completely fills it. The laser ablation catheter is disposed over the surface of the catheter tube and is positioned at a proximal end located at a proximal portion of the catheter tube and at an axial position proximal from about 10 cm to about 60 cm at the distal end of the catheter tube. An outer jacket having a distal end disposed thereon may also be included.
