A joystick is the most convenient and intuitive device for driving a wheelchair. However, an unintended joystick operation is sometimes given by a user, and the joystick is manipulated without regard to a wheelchair operation state. In addition, even if the joystick operation is intended by the user, the wheelchair may not be operated in accordance with the joystick operation. According to the present invention, the concept of the joystick is changed to a device to freely express the user&primes intention for wheelchair operation without using the joystick as a direct operation device to operate the wheelchair. A new joystick system is a device to express the user&primes intention and comprises a joystick lever and a microprocessor capable of analyzing and determining the user&primes intention expressed through the joystick lever. According to the present invention, an unintentional operation of the joystick by the user or a joystick operation which does not consider the wheelchair operation state is screened, and when the user&primes intention is grasped, the wheelchair is able to be correctly operated in accordance with the user&primes intention in consideration of the current operation state of the wheelchair. The new joystick system may be connected to a control device capable of commanding the wheelchair to be operated in accordance with the user&primes intention in consideration of the operation state of the wheelchair, recognized through various sensors.
