PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water absorbing agent which has biodegradability and high gel strength and is made excellent in absorption magnification and gel-layer dipping velocity.SOLUTION: The water absorbing agent comprises a cross-linked naturally-derived polymer and a clay mineral. A particle of the water absorbing agent is formed by using the cross-linked naturally-derived polymer and the clay mineral so that the clay mineral exists on the inside of the particle. The content of the clay mineral is 10-100 pts. mass (in a dried state) when that of the cross-linked naturally-derived polymer is 100 pts. mass (in the dried state). The water absorbing agent can be produced by: preparing a raw material liquid in which the naturally-derived polymer is dissolved and the clay mineral is dispersed; adding a cross-linking agent to the prepared raw material liquid; and cross-linking the naturally-derived polymer.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1【課題】生分解性を有し、ゲル強度が高く、吸収倍率およびゲル通液速度に優れる吸水剤を提供する。【解決手段】架橋した天然由来高分子および粘土鉱物からなる吸水剤であって、架橋した天然由来高分子と粘土鉱物は粒子を形成し、粘土鉱物が粒子の内部に存在し、粘土鉱物の含有量が架橋した天然由来高分子100質量部(乾燥状態基準)を基準として10~100質量部(乾燥状態基準)であることを特徴とする。この吸水剤は、天然由来高分子が溶解し粘土鉱物が分散した原料液を調製し、その原料液に架橋剤を添加し、天然由来高分子を架橋することによって製造することができる。【選択図】図1
