The invention relates to a device for stimulation of neurons, comprising: a stimulation unit which is implantable in the body of a patient and has at least one stimulation element for applying a stimulation signal to the patient's tissue in order thereby to stimulate neurons in the brain and/or spinal cord of the patient; a measuring unit for receiving a measurement signal which reflects a neuronal activity of the stimulated neurons; and a control unit which is coupled to the stimulation unit and to the measuring unit and which generates a modulation signal from the measurement signal, modulates the amplitude of a pulse train comprising a multiplicity of individual pulses and controls the stimulation unit in such a way that the at least one stimulation element applies the amplitude-modulated pulse train as the stimulation signal in order thereby to stimulate the neurons; wherein the individual pulses each have a first pulse component and a second pulse component succeeding the first pulse component, a charge from the first pulse component and from the second pulse component is introduced into the tissue and the other pulse component receives charge from the tissue, and a pause is in each case maintained between the first pulse component and the second pulse component.
